Linking Quonset Point, North Kingstown RI to Block Island
PRESS RELEASE - JULY 2, 2013
Rhode Island Fast Ferry, Inc. applies to the RIPUC for a license to operate a high-speed ferry service to Block Island departing from Quonset Point, North Kingstown, RI.
Owner and President Charles A. Donadio, Jr. said that a fast ferry departing from Quonset Point will attract a new market of visitors to Block Island and encourage more Rhode Island residents and tourists to visit Block Island more frequently. Our convenient departure location in Quonset Point avoids all the heavy beach traffic during the busy summer months.
Charles A. Donadio, Jr. was the founder of Island Hi-Speed Ferry in 1998 which built and operated the Athena between Point Judith and Block Island. Mr. Donadio sold his ownership interest 2001 and founded Rhode Island Fast Ferry which currently operates fast ferries from Quonset Point to Martha’s Vineyard, internationally for the Government of Bermuda and provides narrated Sightseeing and Lighthouse Cruises of Narragansett Bay and Newport Harbor.
The Quonset ferry terminal already has the infrastructure in place including a brand new docking facility, over five acres of dockside parking, inter-modal shuttle connections to/from the Providence Airport and Amtrak Train Stations. Hopping on a ferry from Quonset Point to Block Island would save hours of drive time and remove tens of thousands of cars off the busy highway during the summer months.
Mr. Donadio said he would invest 6-7 million dollars to build a brand new aluminum catamaran offering the latest in sea going technology and luxury, “the ferry would be built for the open ocean to handle the sea conditions with the latest in trim-tab ride control for the smoothest possible ride, the climate controlled interiors would have business-class amenities with large expansive windows providing breathtaking views of the Narragansett Bay and the south County coastline along the way. The ferry service would operate between 2-4 round-trips per day and the 30-mile trip would take apprximately 45-50 minutes.”
A fast ferry to Block Island from Quonset Point offers:
- I-95 Highway access only 8 minutes away
- The new Route 403 highway offers no traffic right to the dock
- Dockside parking
- Providence Airport Shuttle connections
- Kingston, Wickford & Providence Amtrak Shuttle connections
